Centenary Cycle Quest

Who knew that Sir William Percy Honeywood Courtney, King of Jerusalem fomented the last battle to be fought on British soil, in 1838 right here in Kent; or that the French Revolution inspired an unusual clock in Folkestone?  Who knew that Kent was a hotbed of aviation pioneers and that – but for an accident – the first manned powered flight might have been in north Kent not North Carolina.  In unpowered flight, who knew the £100,000 Kremer Prize was won by cycling from Kent for 2 hours and 49 minutes?

Who knew the association between the highest point in Kent and the Catford Hill Climb or the vicarious benefit to cyclists from the axe Dr Beeching took to his hometown?  Who knew the UK Rail speed record was set near the Medway, and that you can see a monument to it?  Who still knows what an ALG is, and why we had so many in our county?

Find out these and many more interesting things by reading the Discover page and then see the map below to visit some of the forty Cycle Quest locations.

Congratulations to the Club members winning the September Cycle Quest competition by visiting the most locations in the month:

  • Charles Goode (gold award)

  • Lorna Stafford (silver)

  • Wendy Lee (bronze).

But if you did not get a chance to have a go in September, don’t worry, it will be staying open for some time yet even though the competition is over.  This is your chance to get on the bike and discover fascinating corners of Kent, some associated with the history and legends of our Club.  All make for a nice bike ride.

A note on Plus Codes:

  • A plus code is shown against each of the Cycle Quest locations.  This is an open source location code just like latitude/longitude.  Crucially, it is recognised by Ride With GPS unlike latitude/longitude or OS grid reference.  So when using RWGPS for route planning you can simply paste the Plus Code into the Location box.  See more about Plus Codes
