With the latest updates from the Government, regarding their easing of the lockdown from the 4th July, allowing many more businesses to reopen and the, somewhat conflicting, messages coming out still from the scientific and medical experts, the Board wishes to inform all members of it’s decision concerning resumption of Club cycling.
The primary and overriding responsibility of the Board is the safety of its members whilst engaged in all activities associated with San Fairy Ann CC.
It is appreciated that, thankfully, the infection rate of COVID 19 seems at this time to have been reduced, there is absolutely no indication whatsoever that this air borne and often lethal virus gives any indication that its nastiness has relented.
Therefore caution has to be our absolute priority and, with cycling, the spores from the breath can be very easily passed to others, even if trying to socially distance.
Therefore a decision has been made to suspend Club rides until further notice.
We took the view that the Government has relaxed its policy in order to get the economy kick started again, which is commendable, if commercial enterprises are to remain viable. However our Club is not profit making and suffers no loss financially by extending suspension of rides until considered safe to resume.
We tried looking at options to tentatively resume rides with the maximum permitted number of 6 riders. However, in practical terms the responsibility placed on coordinators and potential leaders is considered too onerous, especially when trying to restrict greater numbers turning up and the implications of “policing” etc.
I expect that over the course of the last 3 months, most of us have been able to privately cycle, individually or with friends, depending on the guidelines that prevailed at the time, and hopefully that will continue until we can be guaranteed an all clear from the scientific experts.
We appreciate that this will come as a disappointment to many, and sincerely thank everyone who has conformed to lockdown rules, especially not wearing the club kit. As a Board it must be reiterated that the safety of our members is absolute.
On behalf of the Board,
Club Rides Director
